Additive Manufacturing Design Education & research

Post lecture 3D print handling session with Jonathan Rowley at Loughborough University Design School

EXISTING 3D PRINTING / AM EDUCATION

Much design education relating to 3D printing / Additive Manufacturing is focussed on the instruction of how to draw an object in the appropriate CAD software that will then be successfully reproduced by the chosen 3D printing technology.  Even more advanced study in Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) still focusses  primarily on what you can make with AM.  This is invaluable, yet it is only step one.

ADVANCED EDUCATION FOR SLS

Step two is understanding what is then worth making. This brings AM design education to the professional level, specifically concentrating on SLS which is the most versatile and accesible Additive Manufacturing technology available today.  Design graduates entering the working world with a grasp of designing for value and dynamic performance, have the ability to purposefully transform their future employers’ horizons.

Education Sectors

UNIVERSITIES

INDIVIDUAL COMPANIES

INDIVIDUAL COMPANIES

Advanced SLS are available to present lectures and webinars to design education providers across all creative design and engineering courses.  Also available to advise individual students who are focussing on Additive Manufacturing within their studies.

INDIVIDUAL COMPANIES

INDIVIDUAL COMPANIES

INDIVIDUAL COMPANIES

Presentations or workshops are available to companies who have already adopted SLS for Additive Manufacturing or who are considering doing so in the near future.  Design Education is provided on how to optimise parts to maximise value through design.

DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING INSTITUTIONS

DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING INSTITUTIONS

DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING INSTITUTIONS

Presentations are available to any manufacturing institutions and associations who are seeking to inform their members about the potential of Additive Manufacturing to benefit their business with a focus on designing and making objects that produce high value.

EVENTS

DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING INSTITUTIONS

DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING INSTITUTIONS

Advanced SLS are available for presentations specifically on design for SLS at all types of 3D printing / Additive Manufacturing and design events. Education focussing on designing for value, dynamic material performance and the true meaning of AM adoption.

Current lectures / Webinars

Advanced 3D printing with Nylon SLS, Designing for Value

Explaining the factors that drive the cost of 3D printing with SLS.  The objective is to help designers understand the rules of production and thus providing a framework for them to design objects with a clear idea of the cost / value of the project from the outset.  This is illustrated with a series of case studies that show how this understanding successfully enabled a number of high value Additive Manufacturing projects.

About Designing for value
Advanced 3D printing with Nylon SLS, Designing for Performance

This focusses on the dynamic material properties that SLS possesses and reveals how with this technology you can not only design static shapes, but shapes that perform / transform. This powerful characteristic can be used to either maximise productivity to increase value or to produce parts that have functional behaviour. This is illustrated with series of inspiring case studies which demonstrate the dynamic performance of SLS for purposeful design with Additive Manufacturing

About designing for performance

These presentations are invaluable to students and designers across all fields of design activity in terms of showcasing the versatility and creative potential of SLS as today’s most readily available Additive Manufacturing technology. Within an educational context, these presentations also have the potential to form the basis of joint projects between students from different design courses.
